Power of imagination

In the article "Within the Frame", I mentioned "expanding the range of play" when we find ourselves locked in too tight constraints. One way to do it is to use imagination. Today's post is about imagination and its transformative powers.

Imagination helps us to step away from "what is" to envision "what could be". Through imagination, we leave taken-for-granted fixed reality and enter the realm of multiple possibilities.

The remarkable quality of this in-between realm is that it accepts contradictory concepts. When we're in an imaginative space, we're more open to opposing opinions and allow them to interact. In the creative interplay, we integrate diverse ideas into new relationships and build new connections that were not possible before. Imagination allows us to produce new forms, perspectives and understandings and becomes a driver for transformation.

Imagination is not merely visual, in the expressive arts sessions, we get a chance to explore our imagination through different mediums: our body, art materials, storytelling, role-play, etc. In the creative process, it takes shape and gets a chance to be witnessed by others! Artistic activity lets us see, hear, or touch the imagination. Isn't it amazing?

Shaun McNiff in his book "Art Heals" which I used as inspiration for writing this post says, "The first step in accessing the medicines of imagination involves the creation of spaces for practice". Where in your life or workspace is or could be a space for practising imagination?

And a fun question to tap into your imagination: "What superpowers would you choose to have for a day, and how would you use them?" Share them in the comments

Thanks for reading. Share your thoughts or questions in the comments - what resonated with you, what didn't? Your input helps us grow together.
